Dear Christians, Don’t Be On The Wrong Side Of History

A pro-Trump mob invaded the Capitol on January 6, 2020. Let’s talk about it.

As the senate was counting electoral college votes to confirm the outcome of the November 2020 election, a pro-Trump mob broke into the U.S. Capitol causing chaos, and ultimately, five deaths. I’m sure you know all about what occurred a couple days ago. I’m sure you’ve been watching the news and have voiced your opinion somewhere. I’m not going to talk about what happened in detail. I do want to talk about the response I’m seeing and the response that is needed.

What happened on January 6, 2021 was deplorable. It was disgusting. It was unnecessary. But most importantly, it showed the drastic — and saddening — difference between treatment of white people and those of color.

To my fellow brothers and sisters, if you believe in the same Jesus I do, you cannot support what happened and you cannot support the man that instigated it.

I have heard way too many Christians over the past four years say that they don’t like Trump as a person, but they align with some of his policies and that’s why they support him. Let me ask you some questions. Is going inside a physical church during a pandemic more important than having a leader of good character? Is the pro-life movement more important than the five people who were killed because of this?

I believe that Jesus cares about character. I believe that Jesus cares about ethics. And I believe that Jesus cares about compassion. Donald Trump has shown that he has none and this was the last straw.

Please. Do not support him. Not after this. And do not tell people to get over it, or that it wasn’t a big deal. The events that occurred have scared millions of people in this country — myself included. As Christians, we need to ask ourselves if our actions contributed to what happened a couple days ago and what we need to do to remedy that.
